Whether you get a lot of cold sores, or just one or two a year, they hurt you
in many ways, not least of which is the interruption in your social life. This
web site was created to help you avoid the problems created by cold sores.
It will definitely help you
heal and prevent cold sore attacks.
I know there are many articles and web sites providing information about cold
sores. Unfortunately, much of it is inaccurate, misleading or designed to sell
you some miracle oil or cream.
It is my intention here to share with you many years of factual research and
empirical data so that you know the truth and can make educated decisions about
them.
Below are some questions that I frequently receive.
Cold sores ,
also known as fever blisters, are ulcer-like sores that normally appear anywhere
above the waist. Most commonly you will get them on the edge of your lip or
nose, however we have seen them nearly everywhere - arms, fingers, cheeks and
even in the eyes.
(Important note: Always be very careful not to spread it to the eyes. It can
cause permanent vision damage.)
Rarely do
cold sores
appear inside the mouth. A sore in your mouth is usually a canker sore. They are
similarly painful and often mistaken for cold sores. Where cold sores are the
result of a virus, and quite contagious, canker sores are not viral in nature
and are not contagious.
Cold sores are quite painful because they usually form on the surface end of a
nerve cluster. The cold sore is an ulcerated sore created by the viral destruction of
a large number of nerve and skin cells during the replication process.

What Is A Cold Sore?
The primary cause of all
cold sores and fever blisters is the herpes simplex
virus type 1 or type 2. Sores caused by either type are identical in every
respect. Type 1 is responsible for about 75% of all cold sores, and type 2 about
25%.
This virus is present in nearly 90% of the adult population. It is normally
dormant (inactive) and hiding in the cells at the base of the facial nerves.
Nearly 40% of those infected will never know it because they will never get a
cold sore.
As long as the virus remains dormant, it will not create a cold sore. Certain
events, such as illness, injury, stress or sunburn can cause your immunity to
drop and encourage the virus to activate.
Once it senses the opportunity (since it lives in the nerves, it can sense the
slightest change in your body) it travels from cell to cell through the nerve
fiber to the surface.
When it arrives, each virus particle will choose and drill into a tissue cell or
nerve cell and take complete control. Since this virus cannot parent its own
offspring (like bacteria can), it reproduces by forcing the cell to clone it.
Once the victim cell is full, or exhausted, the virus destroys it to release its
new virus particles. The mass destruction of cells by the herpes virus forms
your
ulcer like cold sore or fever blister.

What Causes Cold Sores?
1. Dormant Stage
Symptoms - virus is inactive and hiding in the nerve ganglia.
2. Prodrome Stage
Symptoms -
virus becomes active and migrates to the surface through the nerve fiber causing
an itching, tingling or burning sensation at the target area.
3. Inflammation Stage
Symptoms - virus has reached the surface and invades the cells there. This
will cause redness, irritation and little pimple-like bumps called vesicles.
Lymph glands under the chin swell and you may have mild flu-like symptoms -
fever, headaches and the like.
4. Destruction stage
Symptoms - all the cells swell up and finally rupture, spilling out hoards of
new virus particles. This massive destruction of cells causes an open, ulcer
type sore that quickly crusts over. This is the most contagious and painful
time.
5. Healing Stage
Symptoms - the scab eventually falls off leaving reddish
new skin below. Active virus particles are still present under the skin. Your
body is fighting the virus and replacing the destroyed cells.
The healing stage is the most
frustrating stage. You feel fine but are still too contagious to kiss.
This stage can last up to a week or two.
The total duration from beginning to end may be three weeks or more, depending
on your cold sore treatment plan.

How To Heal A Cold Sore Faster
Your body and immune system will heal a cold sore
without any help from you. However, this could take a long, long time - often up
to 4 weeks. That really is not acceptable.
You can heal a cold sore much faster - by 50% or more - by actively applying
home cold sore remedies.
Something as simple as applying ice at the first tingle can stop the cold sore,
or delay it from forming. Ice is beneficial in several ways. It reduces
discomfort, helps discourage swelling of the tissue and makes it an unfriendly
environment for the virus.
You can apply ice effectively through all stages except the healing stage. At
that point, you need to apply heat. This hastens the healing process by bringing
a rush of oxygenated blood to the area.
Other good topical remedies are
garlic oil, extra virgin olive oil, tea tree oil, peppermint tea and zinc (in
the proper form).
Topical cold sore remedies are the
primary treatments used to fight and heal an outbreak. Most of what you read has
to do with salves, oils or ointments. Because these are surface sores, it makes
sense to use them.
However, if you really want to
know how to heal a cold sore faster - much faster - then you should strongly
consider using internal remedies along with topical treatment.
Although little talked about,
internal cold sore treatment can boost the
results of your best topical treatment by 50% to 80%. I am serious. Many people,
in fact, use only internal remedies for total prevention. Everyone is unique and
different, but it sure is worth a try. It will help you build your own cold sore
treatment plan.

How To Get Rid Of Cold Sores Fast
Nobody wants to endure a cold sore any longer
than they have to, and rightly so. They really hurt you and interfere with a
good social life.
Now, please do not be fooled. There are web sites that claim to have the secret
how to get rid of cold sores in one day or overnight. It is simply not possible
unless the sore has not formed yet. During the first tingling stage, yes, you
can stop it, but once you see it, your body will take more than one day to
repair the damage. Save your money and avoid disappointment.
If you really want to get rid of cold sores fast, you need to provide the
nutrients that strengthen your immune system, remove the protein that keeps it
active and apply a good topical remedy to the site.
